Margaret and David Seward (from Cornwall) June 2015

Margaret and DavidI’d like to add my thanks to you both and to Juan Pablo for the very enjoyable and memorable trip you provided for us. We had a wonderful time and are very grateful to all three of you for all you did on our behalf. We are delighted to have had the chance to return to Extremadura and gain a much fuller experience not just of its birdlife and natural history generally (flowers, butterflies!) but also of the place and its peoples, both in the past and the present, through having such a unique opportunity to visit in the company of people who know it as well as you all do. All three of you looked after us most kindly and we are extremely grateful to you all for a truly memorable trip. You kindly say that you enjoyed our company; we enjoyed yours too – from the start it was like being with old friends.

Gill and Roger Broadbent (from Staffs) June 2015

Thanks again for making the last week so pleasurable. Great itinerary, accommodation in wonderful locations with good food ,company and super birds gave us both all we wanted for a birding holiday.

Liliane Pauwels (from Belgium) May 2015

Rika Driessens (from Belgium) May 2015

Ronduit onvergetelijk!

We had a really great week, with a Spanish friend who had never been birding. Extremadura is wonderful, with an amazing range of countryside, flowers, insects…. The birding was of course excellent. It is so hard to decide a highlight between Spanish Imperial Eagle soaring over us; group of Great Bustards sashaying across the plains; 8 Montagu’s Harriers playing in the air or a Sub-Alpine Warbler with throat vibrating as it sang; seeing nightingales; a penduline tit; we could go on and on. And how do the structures support so many storks without collapsing.

Amparo

Juan Pablo and William know all the bird hot spots but also impart their great love of the area, its culture and history, not to mention the food and wine which we enjoyed greatly. We overlapped with two Belgian naturalists and were working in English, Spanish, French and Dutch (and Latin for final confirmations) a real sharing of knowledge and humour. We loved it and will have to come back in another season.

Barry Catlin (from Monmouth) April 2015

BarryI have been on birding week-ends in the UK, but this was my first organised birding overseas trip. The organisation was excellent from the arrival at Madrid to the departure. Previous to the holiday I had a fall and injured my knee. William and Anna (who was also flying back to the UK at the same time) arranged for wheel chair assistance which was a great help, knowing I did not speak Spanish. My injury had little impact on the weeks birding and did not inconvenience the rest of the group. The birding was fantastic with quite a few seen for the first time. I think the highlight of the week was a visit to a hide to photograph raptors feeding. The hotels and picnic lunches were excellent. After a nine start in the mornings, picnic lunch about 3pm and evening meals start at 8.30pm in Spain, although we did have coffee breaks at mid-day and about five in the afternoon. I would recommend Extremadura Birding to my birding friends and hope to return again.

Pam and Craig Gordon (from Aberdeen) June 2014

Pam CraigPam and I had a fantastic time in Extremadura and have many wonderful memories. The birding was simply fantastic. I haven't totalled all the "lifers" yet but it was many. There were so many memorable birding moments that it's difficult to find a favourite. I was truly amazed at the number of raptors we saw - the three species of vulture, the eagles - Spanish Imperial, Bonelli's, Short-toed and Booted, the Lesser Kestrels, Hobby and of course the numerous Black Kites. Sometimes it wasn't so much seeing rare birds but just enjoying the experiences such as seeing and hearing the numerous hirundines and swifts screaming through the village streets, and the white storks nesting on what seemed to be every roof with their chattering beak displays. We really enjoyed your company, and you really made our holiday with your relaxed and friendly approach. It was very interesting to learn about the wildlife, history and culture of Spain from your incredible knowledge of the country. We also enjoyed your company at the meals and the experience of the Spanish food and red wine. I will certainly recommend Extremadura Birding to the birding groups which I belong to, and my birding friends.

Doreen & Alan Banks (from St Helens) and Alison & Paddy Miller (from Poole) May 2014

Doreen Alan Alison Paddy Alan and DoreenWe would like to thank you and Juan Pablo for giving us a fabulous week of seeing some wonderful birds, amazing array of flowers and spectacular views of the mountains. We would also like to thank lovely Ana for the delicious lunches. We certainly appreciated your vast knowledge of the birds of the area and places we visited. The hotels and the itinerary were very well organised, and we will certainly be recommending this holiday to our friends. We enjoyed the holiday so much we would like to return again and see the few birds that we missed this time. Thank you all once again for your kindness and hospitality.

Bob Lynes, Huw Johns (from Wirral) April 2014

Bob HuwHuw: I found the trip to Spain to be very enjoyable and thought the itinerary well-planned and the overall standard of accommodation very good. As well as some excellent bird-watching, I felt I also learnt a good deal about Extremadura through your expert knowledge. Always smiling, Ana also helped make us very welcome and I especially remember her for one magnificent picnic lunch! I went on this trip with the intention of taking photos of birds and any other wildlife on offer and I was not disappointed by the many opportunities and assistance provided by yourself and Juan Pablo. The poor results were down to me! If anyone is thinking of making a trip to see the birds of Extremadura, likes to take their photographs and also ready to take in the history and culture of this fascinating part of Spain, then I would have no hesitation in recommending they go with 'ExtremaduraBirding'.

Bob: I came to Spain expecting some new birds, but was completely captivated with the whole experience. The benefits of having guides who live there, and have local knowledge, is priceless in finding the birds you hope to see. I came away having seen thirty-three new birds, some, like the black-winged kite, were the views of a life time. The week was a dazzling array of wonderful scenery and close encounters with birds of prey, and many other birds you would die to see in Britain. All done at a leisurely pace, with picnic lunches from your lovely Ana. The accommodation and food in the hotels was fine, and as a semi-vegetarian, I was well catered for. Also my thanks must extend not only to you and your wife, but to the ever capable Juan Pablo, who is a first-class guide.

George Lynes (from Wirral) April 2014

George

Just to say thanks for a really great trip to Extremadura, not only that you and Juan Pablo have expert knowledge of what and where the birds are to be found, but you also gave us info on local history and customs. All adds to the pleasure. Big thanks to Ana for the alfresco lunches. Group size was ideal and company friendly.

I will certainly be recommending you to any of my birding pals, who may be thinking of visiting Spain.

William, Pablo, and Ana have developed a birding trip with a difference.
In comparison to many other companies this trip has a genteel feel about it, but with no detriment to the birder’s experience in Extremadura. William and Pablo are very experienced local birders who know their territory well. The midday sun is dealt with by having leisurely lunches or Ana’s scrumptious picnics in some shady spot.

Excellent value for money, and great organisation.

Pat and Gavin Russell (from Solihull) April 2014

pat and gavinWe cannot recommend our holiday with William and Juan Pablo highly enough. We were looked after by them both extremely well throughout the whole holiday. The accommodation was first class and the birding was spectacular. Without their local knowledge we wouldn't have seen so many species of birds. We were lucky with the weather as the higher than normal temperatures brought in some spring migrants we weren't expecting to see, such as Bee-eaters and Rollers. One of our highlights, although there were many, was seeing a Little Bustard displaying and defending his territory. We also very much enjoyed checking out the butterflies and orchids. Extremadura is a fascinating place and the locals were very welcoming despite our attempts at speaking very poor Spanish. Thank you for a great holiday.

Sue and Colin Johnson (from Fordingbridge) March 2014

Sue & ColinThank you for a fantastic week. You worked so hard to make sure we had a good time and saw all the birds we wanted to see. Col wanted a Hawfinch and Raptors. He got the Hawfinch, Bonelli's Eagle, Booted Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Golden Eagle, Montague's Harrier and more. I wanted photographs and I have so many lovely images that it is really difficult to decide what to send you. The hotels we stayed in were great. Lovely comfortable rooms with excellent facilities and views. We thought the food was topnotch too. We are definitely returning. We want to see the winter birds and we were too early this Spring to see the Bee-eaters and Rollers.

Sue kindly sent a few of her photos.

Terry, Heather and Rose Lister (from Kent) March 2014

hawfinch terry listerWe are safely returned to the UK after a wonderful [if wet] Spanish experience. I had a superb time with you birding and ended up with 14 raptors and dozens of others either new to me or rarities. Not bad for an amateur. The second day, orchid hunting with Juan Paulo, was enjoyed by the whole family. Ten orchids in the rain and an excellent lunch watching the purple heron. We all want to come back. Thank you.

Christine, Alain et Loïc Sauvage (Loire Atlantique) - Octobre 2013

Alain Christine.

David and Pam Manger (from Ashford) - April 2013

David Pam in Campo Lugar 2 1 of 1Now we have had time to reflect on our visit to Extremadura last week, we consider it was one of the most enjoyable weeks we have spent for some time. The number and variety of birds we saw exceeded our expectations, with 21 species we had never seen before. The wildflowers and the colour of the countryside and hillsides were amazing; photographs can never do justice to the real thing. The holiday was made so enjoyable and memorable largely due to the kindness and friendliness shown to us by yourself and Juan Pablo. Both of you offered us insights to your vast knowledge of the local flora and fauna and showed great patience with our own lack of expertise. We thank you for looking after us so well throughout the week, and to Ana as well, for providing the wonderful picnic lunches.

Doug and Judi Helsby (from Tring) - April 2013

Doug Judi in Medellin 2 1 of 1We could not find fault with anything about this trip to Extremadura, from the initial booking right through to departure at Madrid. We received a very clear and well thought out itinerary which provided us with a chance of seeing all our target birds. William and Juan Pablo clearly have a deep understanding of where to find the birds throughout Extremadura and at a pace to suit the individual. The various lodgings were excellent and provided us with good local fare.To add a touch of finesse we were exposed to great Spanish hospitality and culture. We will be returning as it was one of the most rewarding birding trips we have been on.

Doug and Judi put together a tremendous DVD of their visit and have kindly allowed us to put it on YouTube. It lasts 15 minutes and gives a good taste of what you are likely to see. Click here.
